latest round of the cmg spotify playlists compiled by melissa woods and i. this one features some of the artists we’re most excited to see in austin this year including:
Mirel Wagner - The Road
Stereogum just premiered a new track from Mirel Wagner’s forthcoming debut. The February issue of MOJO hipped me to this Ethiopian-born, Finland-raised artist. I can’t describe her music without using the word sparse. This track and her last feature her slightly rough voice over haunting acoustic guitar picking. Both leave plenty of space between the notes — a quality I particularly relish these days.
The stunning video for her last single, “No Death,” is below.
Her SXSW schedule, per Stereogum:
3/12 – PureVolume Party @ Roy’s Austin (340 E. 2nd St., 2AM)
3/14 – RED/Sony Party @ Red 7 (611 E. 7th St., 8PM)
3/15 – Pop Montreal Party @ Spill Bar (212 E. 6th St., 2PM)
3/15 – KevChino Party @ Maison D’Etoile (2109 E. Cesar Chavez, 7PM)
3/16 – North By North Austin @ Weirdo’s (12408 N. Mopac Expwy, 4PM)
3/17 – KVRX Party @ Domy Books (913 E. Cesar Chavez, 4PM)
Michael Kiwanuka & Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) - Lasan
Most people like to get hyped on Fridays. Get the blood flowin’ with phat beats and loud bangers before they have a weekend of shenanigans and hooligan-ish behavior. I on the other hand like to keep it real on the down low. Sit back and de-stress over the previous week and recharge the batteries for the upcoming week of living.
This track comes off Kiwanuka’s upcoming album Home Again. Boy I hope it’s going to be on wax, this guys voice and songs deserve to be preserved on 180-gram vinyl. Whatever Michael Kiwanuka is sellin’ I’m buyin’.
if you’re into woody guthrie, check this out. it’s a little playlist we put together with music inspired by the recently released new multitudes record. it features tracks by springsteen, the byrds, monsters of folk, my morning jacket, dylan, uncle tupelo and the man himself.. mr. guthrie. enjoy.
